about

This month I went back to my roots. I had the great honour of being nominated as a finalist for "Best Instrumentalist" at the 2022 Australian Folk Music Awards. I didn't take home the award, but it did get me reminiscing about my earliest violin-learning memories.

My mum encouraged me to think outside of the box when it came to learning my instrument. I was only 6 years old, but Mum introduced me to all different styles of violin playing as we went on this totally new journey together. Mum is a visual artist, not a musician, sop we were learning the ropes as we went along.

My first and greatest influence was Irish violinist Martin Hayes. I saw him play live with guitarist Dennis Cahill at the Geelong Celtic Festival when I was very young. It had a profound impact on my playing and lead to me getting lesson in Irish, Scottish and Celtic music.

So this month I am sharing the first in a series of stripping things back. This was is a hark back to my folk roots.

Hope you enjoy,
